Everywhere We Go! – Georgia, September 2015 (Donation 55)

55 and counting – The Temi Community, Georgia

by Graeme Baxter

Through some research and a contact in Edinburgh, we were made aware of the excellent work done by the Temi Community. We were particularly touched by a story about a young orphan taken in by the community as a young 5 year old, abandoned by his parents. Through a separate charitable project, the boy required a life saving operation, and received spinal surgery to save his life in Edinburgh in 2012. The young boy has since been adopted by a Scottish family.

At Temi Community, people with different disabilities, orphaned children, single mothers, vulnerable and disenfranchised people live and work together and support each other. The community engage in various projects to work to ensure sustainability of their community. They also offer educational and recreational activities for youths and beneficiaries with severe physical and mental disabilities. Temi community members work in the gardens and greenhouse, growing organic foods for consumption, and work in the kitchen to prepare food and bake bread, build furniture, windows and other needed items.

Hearing about this work led us to choosing the Temi Community as our recipient of a £5,000 donation.

The Georgian FA allowed us the use of the training ground at Mikheil Meshki Stadium, to not only host the presentation, but also to play the TA Select match with the Georgian Fans team. Joined by 40 or so guests from the community, delegates from both the Georgian FA and Cameron Watt from the Scottish FA, as well as representatives from the British Embassy, we presented a cheque to the Temi Community for £5,000.

Following the presentation, some speeches, and a few TV interviews, we gathered in the stands to cheer on the TA Select’s 7-2 win over the Georgian Fans Team, and enjoyed some home grown/homemade bread, fruit, cheese and wine handed round by the Temi Community.

Our continued thanks to everyone who continues to support the Sunshine Appeal, which allows us to support these fantastic organisations.
